CFM56-5B borescope inspection guide

The CFM56-5B powers most of the A320ceo family and shares its core architecture with the -7B on the 737NG, so an inspector who knows one is at home on the other. The port map, the limits and the paperwork are -5B specific.

Module by module

  • Fan and booster. Fan blades for leading-edge damage, tip wear and bonding; booster stages for FOD and erosion.
  • High-pressure compressor. Stage by stage through the ports for nicks, dents, tip curl, erosion and blade root condition; the core is rotated with the turning tool so every blade passes the port.
  • Combustor. Liner cracks, burn-through, carbon, fuel nozzle condition.
  • High-pressure turbine. Nozzle guide vanes for cracks, TBC spallation and burning; blades for tip rub, cracks, coating loss, erosion and cooling-hole blockage.
  • Low-pressure turbine. Cracks, missing material, deposits.

Findings inspectors see most

TBC spallation on HPT hardware, HPC blade damage from ingestion, combustor liner cracking with age, and tip rub after an event. Each has a limit in the AMM by stage and location; the limit decides serviceable, repetitive inspection or removal.

What the report records

Engine identity (ESN, TSN/CSN), the AMM task, every stage with video and findings sized against the limit, the status per module, the equipment used and the inspector's signature.

Transitions

The -5B fleet changes hands constantly as A320ceos move between operators and lessors; delivery and redelivery borescopes with video, QEC/EBU inventories and records audits are the normal package. Tell us the engine and we confirm capability.

FAQ

How does the -5B differ from the -7B for inspection?
Same core family; different port positions, limits and documentation, and a different aircraft around it.
How long does a full -5B borescope take?
A few hours on wing once cooled, plus the write-up.
Is video of every stage required?
For transactions, yes; for scheduled tasks, the operator's procedure decides.
